Kamisato Ayato, Genshin Impact’s newest character, has now been out long enough that players are realizing what a powerful addition he can be to their teams. Ayato can function exceptionally well as a Hydro DPS character like Childe, and can also fulfill a pseudo-supportive role thanks to his Elemental Burst.

While a quick test run of Ayato might indicate that his gameplay consists solely of “Hold his Skill and watch all the enemies die,” he actually has a few nuances you can exploit to push his potential even further. This guide will cover some tricks you can incorporate into your gameplay to make sure no one questions the Kamisato Clan’s authority.

Ayato's Skill Counts As Normal Attacks

Although this fact only gets a brief mention in his Skill’s description, it is a critical facet of playing Ayato effectively. Since his slashes during his Skill count as Normal Attacks, they can benefit from a wide variety of buffs and enhancements that something like Raiden Shogun’s Burst cannot.

As enhanced Normal Attacks, Ayato’s Skill can take advantage of/trigger the effects of: Yun Jin’s Burst, Beidou’s Burst, Jean’s C2, Shenhe’s Held Skill, and more. Ayato’s own Burst also increases the damage of Normal Attacks within its AoE, meaning that Ayato can chain together plenty of bonuses to make his Skill even more deadly.

Use Ayato's Burst Before His Skill

As mentioned above, Ayato’s Skill damage will be increased when used inside the area of his Burst. For this reason, make sure to use his Burst before his Skill during his rotation.

Ayato’s Skill lasts six seconds while his Burst last a whopping eighteen seconds, so any teammates who want to take advantage of Ayato’s Burst will still have plenty of time to switch in and make use of the rainstorm. Alternatively, you can keep Ayato on the field and actually squeeze in a second use of his Skill just before his Burst ends.

Ayato Gains Stagger Resistance During Skill

Another aspect of Ayato’s Skill that might go unnoticed is that it increases his resistance to interruption, similar to the effect Eula receives during her Burst. This means you can worry less about dodging attacks during his Skill and focus more on slicing opponents with a torrent of blades.

Although you can avoid being staggered, remember that you will still take full damage from attacks that hit you in this stance. Keep an eye on your health bar and consider giving Ayato a shield or a source of healing if you find yourself getting too beat-up during your Skill’s duration.

Use Ayato's Charged Attack To Reposition

Like many characters in Genshin Impact, Ayato doesn’t typically utilize his actual Normal Attacks (despite how cool the animations look). It’s true that they’re rather slow and their damage isn’t the highest; however, his Charged Attack might be worth paying attention to on its own.

Ayato’s Charged Attack is strikingly similar to Ayaka’s fifth Normal Attack in terms of visuals, and they can also share a similar use. If you ever find yourself pinned against a wall by some large Ruin Guards, for instance, you can use his Charged Attack to strike through them and reposition. Granted, this is a pretty niche scenario, but it might allow you to salvage a Spiral Abyss floor in the future.

Ayato's Needs Less Energy Recharge

Energy Recharge is an important stat for all characters in Genshin Impact, enabling you to use their Bursts smoothly and frequently. This is no less true for Ayato, who has an incredibly potent Burst, but Ayato can get away with less Energy Recharge than many of his counterparts.

This is thanks to his Fourth Ascension Passive, which will regenerate two Energy for Ayato every second he is off-field when his Energy is less than 40. If Ayato is your team’s main-DPS, you’ll probably deploy him before you’re able to gain the full benefit of this effect, but it is extremely useful nonetheless. It will almost constantly be recharging your Burst, meaning your Artifact sub stats can invest less into ER and more into offensive stats like ATK% and Crit Rate/DMG.

Use Ayato's Burst As Much As Possible

Only a small portion of Genshin Impact’s roster can maintain a near-100 percent uptime on their Elemental Burst, so this capability of Ayato should not be overlooked. His Burst has an 18-second duration with a 20-second cooldown, allowing you to maintain it almost constantly as long as you have enough Energy Recharge.

Whether you’re using Ayato’s Burst to buff his own Skill’s damage, strengthen another character’s Normal Attacks, or provide consistent Hydro application for a Freeze composition, your team will benefit greatly from this ability. Try to use his Burst as soon as it comes off cooldown to take advantage of its power as often as possible.
