Final Fantasy 14 is a game that has a lot of things to collect. Some say that "glamor is the true endgame" and plenty of players take that to heart, traveling the world of Eorzea to find only the best items with which to outfit their characters for maximum cool points.

One such category of collectible items is mounts. Not only are these incredibly useful for getting around the large areas in the game (even more so once you've unlocked flying), but they can add some serious style to your character. One of the first mounts you're likely to get is the Company Chocobo, which is obtained by completing the quest My Little Chocobo after joining a Grand Company, something you'll have to do during the main story quests.

My Little Chocobo Quest

Depending on the Grand Company you've chosen, this is where you can pick up the My Little Chocobo Quest that unlocks mounts for your character. You need to be level 20 in order to accept these quests and have completed the prerequisite main story quest.

Ul'dah - Immortal Flames

  • NPC: Swift
  • Location: Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (X:8, Y:8)
  • Must have completed For Coin and Country level 20 main scenario quest.

Limsa Lominsa - Maelstrom

  • NPC: R'ashaht Rhiki
  • Location: Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:13.1, Y:12.8)
  • Must have completed Till Sea Swallows All level 20 main scenario quest.

Gridania - Twin Adder

  • NPC: Vorsaile Heuloix
  • Location: New Gridania (X:9, Y:11)
  • Must have completed Wood's Will Be Done level 20 main scenario quest.

On completion, you will get the Chocobo Whistle item (to summon your own Chocobo) and will unlock the My Little Chocobo achievement.

How To Unlock Different Mounts

Below is a list of methods used to acquire mounts in Final Fantasy 14. Almost every activity in the game has the capability of rewarding you with a mount, and it's a good idea to seek out the ones you like the most. If there's a certain mount you have your eye on, you can use FFXIV Collect to find out exactly where to get it and whether or not you can simply purchase the Mount on the Marketboard.

Main Scenario Quests

There are a few mounts that you'll pick up as you proceed through the main story quests, and they usually have some narrative importance. For example, one part of Stormblood's story will have you taking on an entire dungeon in order to acquire a Yol. This becomes a permanent Mount for you to use. If we're lucky, we might see some more story mounts in the upcoming Endwalker expansion.

Side Quests

While they aren't important to the overarching narrative of Final Fantasy 14, some mounts can be acquired either as a reward or as part of a side quest. One example of this is the Unicorn, which is an easy Mount to get as the only requirement is being a Level 30 Conjurer.

Special Events

Final Fantasy 14 has many events that match up with real-world events, such as Valentione's Day in February and the Starlight Celebration in December. While they don't always feature mounts as rewards, it's a good idea to check out what's on offer just in case. If you miss your chance to nab these time-limited mounts, there is usually a chance to get them by paying real money on the Optional Item Store (usually event items are added to the item store the year after they first debuted).

Achievements

As you progress through Final Fantasy 14, you will undoubtedly pick up a lot of Achievements. Some of these have rewards attached, and some of these rewards are mounts. These are usually reserved for the rarer, more difficult, or time-consuming achievements.

There are some for being successful in PvP for example, and there are notorious mounts that require playing hundreds of instances as a certain tank job. These mounts are serious badges of pride.

Dungeons

There is only one Dungeon at the moment that offers a mount — Ala Mhigo, a Dungeon towards the end of Stormblood's story. The chest that drops after beating the final boss has a chance of dropping a Magitek Predator Identification Key, which will let you use a Magitek Predator as a Mount. It's not guaranteed, though, so Mount hunters may be spending a lot of time in Ala Mhigo.

While there has only been a single Dungeon-exclusive Mount so far, it'll be interesting to see if Endwalker launches with a new one to hunt for and enjoy.

Trials

Trials are one of the more classic ways to acquire mounts. They usually drop from Extreme Trials and each expansion's Trials have a theme for their mounts — for example, Heavensward's Extreme Trials drop large birds called lanners. These have very low drop rates, so you can often find farming parties on the Party Finder to expedite the process.

One notable Mount is the Rathalos, ripped straight from the world of Monster Hunter. This Mount can drop from the Extreme version of the tricky The Great Hunt Trial, added in Stormblood.

Purchase With Gil

There are some mounts that can be bought outright with Gil, but they are extremely expensive. One example is the Resplendent Vessel of Ronka, which can be bought at Eulmore for a whopping 25M Gil. Hopefully, you'll know some ways to make Gil quickly.

Be wary when looking these mounts up on the Marketboard, as shifty players may well try to make a profit on these uber-expensive items.

Purchase With MGP

Quite a few mounts can be purchased at the Gold Saucer. These will usually cost a really great deal of MGP, so only the most dedicated gamblers and Triple Triad players will get to ride around on Gilgamesh's buddy Typhon or the majestic Fenrir.

Purchase With Beast Tribe Currencies

Making friends with the various Best Tribes of the world can be quite useful for those who enjoy collecting mounts. This method requires some dedication though as the Beast Tribe traders will only sell mounts once you've reached the highest level of friendship, meaning that glorious Striped Ray is a long way off if you haven't been working your fingers to the bone for the Kojin.

Purchase With Skybuilder's Scrips

Working on Ishgard's newest Residential Area can be quite profitable for Mount hunters. There are a few ways to get mounts here, but the main way is to use Skybuilder's Scrips, so there's plenty of benefits to using Ishgardian Restoration to level up your Crafting and Gathering classes.

Crafting

Speaking of crafting, there are currently two mounts that can be crafted. These are the Magicked Bed and the Flying Chair. The former is a Carpenter recipe that requires the Master Carpenter VII recipe book, and the latter is an Alchemist recipe that similarly needs Master Alchemist V to craft.

FATEs

Two mounts are acquired by using currencies dropped by special FATEs. The first is Ixion, which requires the FATE A Horse Outside, and the second is Ironfrog Mover from the FATE A Finale Most Formidable. These FATEs spawn rarely so keep an eye on your chat log for any callouts — you don't want to miss these cool mounts.

Artifact Weapon Areas

Since Stormblood there have been entirely separate instanced areas for players to play in with the purpose of creating and upgrading their Artifact Weapons. These are The Forbidden Land, Eureka, and The Bojzan Southern Front. Both of these have various mounts to collect, whether from lockboxes, raid rewards, or cluster exchanges.

Wondrous Tails

There are even mounts to be had from Khloe Aliapoh in Idyllshire. You can get mounts both by using Gold Certificates of Recommendation or by saving up some Faux Leaves by playing Faux Hollows.

The Hunt

Taking part in the various Hunts across the world of Final Fantasy 14 rewards you with valuable currencies. These can sometimes be used to acquire mounts — save up Clan Mark Logs to get the majestic Wyvern or accrue 3,200 Sacks of Nuts to afford the foreboding Forgiven Reticence.

Deep Dungeons

There are three different Deep Dungeons in the game used primarily for level grinding, but they also contain a range of rewards that players might desire. Each Deep Dungeon has a mount that you can aim for, from the creepy Disembodied Head to the stylish Black Pegasus.

PvP

PvP is great for styling out your character, whether you're going for cool costumes or awesome mounts. Wolf Marks can be traded for Magitek Sky Armor if you can manage to get 20,000 of them. Additionally, mounts are often rewarded for doing extremely well in The Feast arena mode.

Mogstation

Of course, many mounts are acquired simply by purchasing them with real money on the Mogstation. Whether these are truly worth it is up to you, as they are often the most expensive items on the storefront. Notably, the SDS Fenrir motorcycle Mount has the unique quality of being quicker than other mounts even without the speed increases that you can get in the game.

Premium/ Special Offers

There are some mounts that are time-limited to a greater extent than the game's Special Events. These can be rewards for pre-ordering an expansion pack, or taking part in a real-world promotion such as the recent Butterfinger campaign which saw players buying lots of chocolate to obtain a Chocorpokkur Mount.

Recruit A Friend Campaign

There are three mounts that are exclusive to the Recruit a Friend Campaign in Final Fantasy 14. Recruiting friends will earn you special Gold Chocobo Feathers that can then be used to purchase the Twintania, Amber Draught Chocobo, or Managarm mounts. You'll also earn additional feathers when your friends subscribe past certain milestones too.

Moogle Treasure Trove

The Moogle Treasure Trove is an event that pops up fairly regularly within the game. Though it doesn't offer any unique mounts that you can't get anywhere else, it offers an easier way to get mounts that are usually obtained via other methods.

For example, instead of battling out those tough trials to get the mount you want, you can simply farm the special moogle tomes and redeem them during the event to get mounts instead. The mounts on offer change each time the event reappears, so make sure you don't miss out whenever it next pops up!
