Throughout the main story in Final Fantasy 14, you will have to enter solo-instances in which you face powerful enemies without the aid of your fellow Warriors of Light. In the Will of the Moon quest, you'll have to enter a similar situation, but this quest is notorious for its difficulty.

In this duty, you'll have to fight Sadu and Magnai back to back, all while dealing with some difficult mechanics. Let's take a look at how to defeat Sadu and Magnai and complete this quest.

This guide contains slight spoilers for the duty.

The Will of the Moon Duty Walkthrough

The Will of the Moon is a level 70 solo-instance that takes place during the post-Stormblood quests. In this duty, you must first defeat Sadu in a 1-on-1 battle, on the condition that if she loses, she will have the Dotharl support the Alliance. However, as the fight continues, Magnai takes notice and attempts to intervene. At this point, you will take control of Y'shtola and keep Magnai busy while the Warrior of Light engages in heated "negotiations" with Sadu.

Because this is a single-player instance, any Job you choose to play will be able to clear it. Tanks with good self-healing like Dark Knight and Warrior are good if you find yourself taking a lot of damage, but DPS Jobs will be better at dealing with the time constraints of certain mechanics. Ultimately, choose the Job you are best at using.

Sadu Heavensflame

Sadu will have a total of five phases that you must progress through. Each phase adds on attacks to the last, and Sadu will fully restore her health each time a new phase begins. Below are each of the attacks she gains during each phase, and how to avoid them.

Phase 1

At the beginning of the fight, Sadu will have access to the following attacks.

  • Fire: Deals unavoidable damage to the target.
  • Dispelling Wind: Deals damage in a short line AoE to the front of Sadu. Step to either side to avoid.
  • Summon Khun Chuluu - Epigraph: These untargetable summoned enemies will use Epigraph to create intersecting line AoEs across the arena. Stand in a safe square to avoid this attack.

Phase 2

In addition to the attacks from phase 1, Sadu will now use the following attack.

  • Summon The Shattered Star: Sadu will summon six copies of her staff that will begin casting a ring AoE centered on each staff. The ring AoEs will overlap in such a way that the center of each ring will be unsafe, meaning you will need to move into a small sliver between the outer rings where the AoEs do not overlap.

Phase 3

In this phase, Sadu will use all previous attacks, and will additionally summon a new type of enemy.

  • Summon Khun Shavar: Sadu will summon three of this enemy at a time. Each Khun Shavar will attack with the following abilities.
    • Ancient Blizzard: The Khun Shavar will move to edges of the arena and begin casting a wide cone AoE attack. These cones will overlap and cover a majority of the arena, so find a safe spot outside of the AoE near the edges of the arena.
    • Tornado: The Khun Shavar will cast a medium-sized circle AoE near your location that will deal a moderate amount of damage after a few seconds. This attack is easy to avoid by moving outside the AoE marker.

After defeating all three Khun Shavar, then depleting Sadu's health bar, the fight will move into phase 4.

Phase 4

In this phase, Sadu will use attacks from phases 1 and 2. Additionally, she will introduce a new mechanic, Falling Dusk. As soon as this phase begins, Sadu will do the following.

  • Summon Dotharli Khun Chuluu: Sadu will summon two of these enemies that will perform the following attacks.
    • Fire: Deals unavoidable damage to the target
    • Epigraph: Deals damage in a straight line AoE.
  • Falling Dusk: At the same time Sadu summons the Dotharli Khun Chuluu, she will begin casting Falling Dusk. This long-casted ability will instantly kill you if it is allowed to be finished casting. To interrupt Sadu, you will need to kill both Dotharli Khun Chuluu within the time limit.
  • Summon The Shattered Star: This attack will occur slightly after Sadu fails to cast Falling Dusk. Avoid in the same way as from phase 2.

Phase 5

This is the final phase of the fight, and will have Sadu combining all previous mechanics.

  • Meteor Impact: As soon as this phase begins, Sadu will summon a Starfall Circle and begin casting Meteor Impact. Similar to Falling Dusk from the previous phase, this attack will instantly kill you if it finishes casting. To avoid dying to Meteor Impact, you must defeat Sadu before it finishes. This means that this entire phase is on a one-minute timer, so work quickly.
    • A countdown will be periodically displayed showing you how much time is remaining before the Meteor Impact.
  • Repeating and overlapping attacks: While the meteor continues to fall, Sadu will repeat and overlap attacks from the previous phases in the following order.
    1. Summons Khun Chuluu to use Epigraph in criss-cross AoE
    2. Summons three Khun Shavar that use Fire and Tornado
    3. Summons three Shattered Star that use ring AoEs.
  • Avoid each of these attacks like you have in the previous phases while focus all attacks on Sadu. Defeat her before the Meteor Impact and finish this half of the duty.

Magnai the Older

For the second half of this duty, you will take control of Y'shtola and face Magnai and Daidukul. This section isn't as difficult as Sadu, but you'll still need to be careful when fighting Magnai. Let Hien face Daidukul while you focus on Magnai.

As Y'shtola, you will have access to four actions, listed below.

  • Stone of the Seventh Dawn: Deals damage to the target
  • Cure of the Seventh Dawn: Restores an ally's HP
  • Aero of the Seventh Dawn: Inflicts a damage-over-time effect on the target
  • Aetherwell: Restores the user's MP

When using Y'shtola, be sure to keep your DoT, Aero, on Magnai at all times. Restore your MP with Aetherwell when it nears 50 percent, and use Cure when necessary. Be sure to heal Hien throughout the fight, as he will take damage from Daidukul.

Each of Magnai's attacks are listed below.

  • Violent Earth: Magnai will deal damage in a circle AoE that follows you, three times. Avoid this attack by moving away from each AoE when it appears.
  • Summon The Scale of the Father: Magnai will move near the center of the arena and summon nine Scales of the Father (copies of Magnai's axe) around the arena. Each of these will begin casting Flatland Fury, which is a circle AoE entered on each copy of the axe. To avoid this attack, you need to destroy the Scale of the Father in the center of the arena. Destroying the center axe will also prevent Hien from taking damage.
  • Wind Chisel: Magnai will create cone AoEs in a half-circle shape in front of him with small gaps between each cone. Stand in between the slivers of the cone AoEs to avoid this attack.
  • Tomahawk: Magnai will target Hien and deal significant damage to him, bringing him close to death. Immediately after, Daidukul will begin casting Tranquil Annihilation. This attack will deal roughly 85 percent of Hien's health, meaning he will die if he is not at nearly full health. After Magnai uses Tomahawk, quickly heal Hien to full. Then, after Daidukul finishes using Tranquil Annihilation, heal Hien back up again.

Magnai will repeat each of these attacks except for Tomahawk until he reaches roughly 20 percent HP. At this point, he will summon Scales of the Father like before, but this time they will have significantly increased defense. Instead of destroying the center one like before, move to the small circle behind Hien near the edge of the arena. After a short delay, Hien will destroy the Scale in front of you, saving you both.

After that, Magnai will tether Y'shtola and Hien and begin an Active Time Maneuver. Rapidly press buttons to escape Magnai's Dawn Judgment, or be completely annihilated. If you successfully escape the Active Time Maneuver, you will defeat Magnai and complete the duty.
