Once you've gotten a few hunts under your belt in Monster Hunter Rise, you'll start getting side quests that ask you to capture a monster. According to the in-game manual, capturing gives you a higher chance of scoring certain rare parts. That makes it worth capturing the monster instead of killing it in many situations. Here's how to do it.

What You Need To Capture A Monster

Your work begins before you even leave Kamura Village. You need to prep three items for your Item Pouch: Tranq Bombs, a Pitfall Trap, and a Shock Trap. Tranq Bombs can be bought from Kagero or the Guild Hub merchant, and the traps can sometimes be purchased from Rondine of the Argosy.

If you'd rather craft your own traps, here are the recipes: Pitfall Traps are made from a Net and Trap Tool, Shock Traps are made from a Thunderbug and Trap Tool. The materials for a Net (Ivy + Spider Web) and Thunderbugs can be found in the wild. Trap Tools can be purchased from merchants.

It's worth noting that monsters with electrical abilities, like Zinogre, are immune to Shock Traps. You're also only allowed to keep one of each trap on you. Should you fail to capture a monster, you can restock in your tent.

Knowing When To Capture

For the most part, a capture hunt works just like any other. Find the monster, fight the monster. Feel free to pull out all the stops and break off parts - the goal is to get the monster to a severely weakened state. When that time comes depends on whether you play solo or multiplayer.

If you're playing single-player, your trusty Palico will let you know exactly when the opportunity arises. You'll get a very clear message on the right side of the screen, "Our purrrey is weak! Ripe for capture!" As soon as you see that, get your trap ready.

If you're playing with several friends, you won't have your Palico to help out. Instead, you'll need to pay attention to the monster's movements. You're probably used to seeing monsters run away several times during a hunt. What you want to wait for is when it starts to limp as it escapes. This is a telltale sign that the monster is on its last legs. At this point, ready your trap and let your comrades know you intend to capture the beast. Really, you should let them know at the beginning if you're using voice chat, but a reminder wouldn't hurt so no one kills the monster.

How To Capture A Monster

When the time is right, put some distance between you and the monster. Use a trap, preferably in a spot closer to the center of the current area - somewhere you know the monster is likely to step. Your hunter will take some time to place the trap in the ground, hopefully undisturbed as your animal friends/fellow players keep it busy. When the trap is laid, position yourself so that the trap is between you and the monster. Use a ranged weapon or throw your kunai to get the monster's attention. It should come after you and spring the trap.

If all worked out well, the monster should be stuck in the ground or stunned by electricity in front of you. Quickly switch to your Tranq Bombs and get near the monster's head. Drop two Tranq Bombs. That should put it to sleep, ending the hunt and securing your capture!

If for some reason this doesn't work, you'll need to beat up on the monster a bit more. Give it some hits, and then try the trap again. And don't forget, you can restock in your tent if you run out!
