Shagaru Magala is an elder dragon and the adult form of Gore Magala, it first appeared on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and was last seen in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. After a few years, it needed a proper adaptation to current generations in the series, and here's all you need to know to beat it.

Shagaru Magala - Strengths And Weaknesses

Shagaru Magala has similar weak spots as its cub form, with the Head and Fore Legs being the most obvious ones. It will be particularly weak to Poison, Fire, and Slashing Damage, but also immune to Blast, Sleep and Paralysis, so measure your choices before assembling a loadout to deal with this massive dragon.

  • Weak Points - Head, Fore Legs, Neck
  • Resistant Points - Torso Wingarms, Wings
  • Elemental/Ailment Weakness - Poison, Fire
  • Elemental/Ailment Resistance - Paralysis, Blast, Sleep
  • Best Weapon Damage - Slashing Damage

Best Equipment To Fight Shagaru Magala

Shagaru Magala is particularly weak to Poison and Fire, weapons that can be easily found across numerous weapons trees. The Empress Regalia (Rathian's Insect Glaive)and the Rosenfader+ (Espinas' Longsword) are among the best options out there, but there's one that is particularly good, called the Rosenzahn+, Espinas' Dual Blades. These inflict both Poison and Fire with a whopping 20% of Affinity and Purple sharpness, which makes it easily the best option against this elder dragon.

On the armor side, you don't need any specific elemental resistance since other things are way more important in this fight, so you want armor sets that can provide skills that help you to have more sustain and mobility, like Consitution, Evade Window, or Evade Distance. Zinogre X or Nargacuga X with Constitution (halving stamina consumption when evading or blocking) or Evade Window/Extender skills (which extends the invulnerability period and the distance covered when you evade) will be certainly useful and will sport enough Raw Defense for you to keep a steady assault against Shagaru Magala.

Another great option is the Lunagaron armor set, which presents a new skill called Redirection. This ability turns a perfect-timed Switch Skill Swap into an auto-evade movement that also recovers your Wirebug Gauge, and if you remember the Temporal Mantle from Monster Hunter World, you know that's something that can't be overlooked.

  • Weapons - Rosenfader+, Empress Regalia, Rosenzahn+
  • Armor - Zinogre X, Nargacuga X, Lunagaron

Shagaru Magala - Fight Breakdown And Moves

MHR_Shagaru_Magala_004

Shagaru Magala is one of the first elder dragons you will face in Master Rank, and a very aggressive one. It's basically an overgrown version of Gore Magala with more energy and offensive power, so while you will recognize some movements like the expanding line AoEs or the Frenzy-Inducing attacks, it will also sport new hard-hitting moves. Aerial dive bombs, charged punches using any of its several arms that will lift you up in the air, various kinds of Frenzy projectiles, and also a meteor rain that gets summoned while Shagaru Magala enters into an enraged mode, all those movements are incredibly powerful and you must never off your guard. The climax of Shagaru Magala's strategy is a massive blast that this monster will shoot from its mouth, and you must avoid at all costs.

It is highly recommended to use a weapon that helps you to get out of a tight space or tricky situation, like Dual Blades and Insect Glaives, or something that can allow you to endure several hits, like a Charge Blade or a Gunlance. On your first encounter, most of its attacks while it's enraged will most likely one-shot you, especially the line AoE, so keeping your mobility or your shields up is absolutely important. After dealing significant damage you will make Shagaru Magala snap out of its enraged mode, and then you just have to keep fighting until you prevail.
