One of the four monsters introduced in this update is Gold Rathian, making a comeback after its last appearance in Monster Hunter Iceborne. This rare variant of Rathian displays acrobatic and swift moves, some of them even superior to the ones Rathian has, sporting a gold coating and breathing high-temperature flames, ready to annihilate you. Here's everything you need to know.

Gold Rathian - Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Weak Points - Leg, Tail
  • Resistant Points - Back, Head
  • Elemental/Ailment Weakness -Water, Thunder
  • Elemental/Ailment Resistance - Poison, Stun, Blast
  • Best Weapon Damage - Shooting Damage

Surprisingly, Gold Rathian is weaker against Shooting Damage, something fairly uncommon, but convenient given how hard her close-range movements hit. That being said, the damage difference compared to Slash and Bludgeoning weapons is not that dramatic, and given how fast she moves you may have a better time with blademaster weapons than trying to aim your shots at her. On the elemental side, she's weak to Water and Thunder, particularly to the latter, so weapons like the Zinogre or Almudron lines may be convenient, but don't get your hopes up for status builds, since she's resistant to both Blast, Stun, and Poison.

Best Equipment To Fight Gold Rathian

  • Weapons - Oppressor's Rift, Mud Shredders, Avidya Scythe (or any Nargacuga weapon)
  • Armor - Seething Bazelgeuse, Furious Rajang

Given that Golden Rathian is weak to Shooting and Thunder Damage, you have a massively effective tool in the Oppressor's Rift, the Zinogre's Light Bowgun, that allows you to use Thunder Piercing Bullets, which can be immensely useful against this particular monster. If that doesn't convinces you, you can go for the other weakness and employ the Almudron Dual Blades, the Mud Shredders, sporting purple sharpness and a huge amount of elemental damage. And while these blades could serve you perfectly in battle, if you prefer to ditch the elemental approach altogether then anything with high affinity is highly recommendable, for which the Nargacuga weapons are the best example.

On the armor side, anything with high Fire Resistance should do the trick. The Pride (Seething Bazelgeuse) and Grand Divine Ire (Furious Rajang) sets are some of the best set options for that, but also keep in mind to use decorations that give you immunity to Poison and Stun, otherwise, you will have an annoying time in battle.

Gold Rathian - Fight Breakdown And Moves

Think of Gold Rathian as a faster, spicier take on the well-known monster. Her movements are swift and more acrobatic than the normal version when she enrages, so maneuvers like her poisonous tail swipe will now show alternate versions, one with a spiraling movement and another one mixed up with a lunging tackle. Likewise, the usual chain of fireballs will also introduce new variants, one where she shoots a bigger fireball followed by a blue flame AoE attack, and another similar one where she takes flight and shoots a massive blue fireball. Needless to say, both hit very, very hard.

The general idea in this fight is to avoid being tackled or hit by her poisonous tail swipe, so at all times try to stay on her sides, and re-position as soon as possible otherwise. Her flaming attacks are usually pretty avoidable but don't get too comfortable because she is fast and the AoE attacks will catch you off-guard in the least expected moment. In short, keep the offensive on her flanks and maintain prudent distance when you see her mouth lighting up with blue flames.
