The Cliffbottom Catacombs is one of the many short dungeons you can enter in Elden Ring’s Liurna region to get some runes, useful items, and the unique Kaiden Sellsword Spirit Ashes. As with other catacombs in the game, this particular dungeon is filled with imps, ogres, traps and plenty of other hazards that you’ll need to overcome in order to claim your rewards.

This particular dungeon is one of the many areas to complete in Liurna to gain runes and levels before tackling the challenging Raya Lucaria Academy legacy dungeon to progress through the game. It culminates in a boss fight against another Erdtree Burial Watchdog variant, which you may be familiar with from the earlier catacomb dungeons.

You can find Cliffbottom Catacombs in the east of the Liurna region, at the bottom of some cliffs as the name aptly describes.

Cliffbottom Catacombs is slightly more difficult than the catacomb dungeons in Limgrave due to the addition of ogre type enemies, which pack a serious punch. Aside from this though, the method of navigating the dungeon is similar to the other catacombs - find a lever to unlock a locked door in order to progress to the boss.

The imps in this dungeon love to hide in shadows, so it’s recommended to bring a torch to illuminate your surroundings. In addition, you might want to have a Stonesword Key to access an area with some additional items.

Dungeon Walkthrough

From the site of grace, turn right and head downwards using the button-activated elevator. There’s only one way forward from here, so head down the tunnel where you’ll see an imp that you need to fight.

Turn left and go down the stairs. You’ll arrive at a familiar closed door between statues that is ‘locked by some contraption’ as usual. Go right and then turn the corner again. There’s another imp around this corner so be careful.

Continue down the corridor until you arrive at a set of arches. Go down the stairs to the lower level.

Take caution before you enter the next long corridor. There’s an imp on the ceiling and a switch that will activate a magical trap. Move around the square button switch and kill the imp.

At the end of this corridor, you’ll be in a big open room with a staircase that goes up to an area with a grey mist wall which can be opened with a Stonesword Key to get some optional items. In the arches next to the stairs on the ground level you can find a sleeping ogre. On the upper section, you’ll find another ogre patrolling between two archway sections. There’s nothing fascinating in these archways, but you can kill the various imps and ogre around here for a good amount of runes.

The next room has another button activated magic dart trap. Be sure to move around the square button that activates it. You can also use this to kill the ogres if you dodge roll at the right time!

Head right from the trap room into a room that overlooks the steps you went down earlier. From here you can find a golden rune in one corner and a Scythe on a body in another small room with a switch trap.

To find the lever and progress from this upper level, you need to drop onto the stairs that you already went down and drop below them again, into a pit of ogres. From here head east. There is an opportunity to kill an ogre with a magic trap by standing on the trap activating button and rolling to the side. Turn right from here and head up the long ladder.

At the top of the ladder you’ll find an ogre at an altar and on the other side, the statue with the lever you need to pull to progress to the boss.

Boss Guide

This Erdtree Burial Watchdog has a similar pattern to the other bosses that have the same name. This one is functionally the same as the watchdog with a staff that is also found at the end of the Minor Erdtree Catacombs.

In order to defeat them, you’ll need to keep your distance whenever possible and dodge roll away from the attack where they slam their staff into the ground. When they’re sending a set of ranged magic projectiles towards you, time your dodge to the last second in and move to the left or right to spread the projectiles out, so they don’t hit you.

If you’re a sorcery-based build, the strategy for this fight is fairly easy: use Glintstone Pebble or Glintstone Stars at range and just keep dodging out the way. For melee builds, you’ll need to exploit the window after the watchdog slams into the ground, where you have a few vital seconds to get heavy attacks in.

Once you’ve defeated the watchdog, you’ll receive the Kaiden Sellsword Spirit Ashes and a useful number of runes!
