Storage is a precious commodity in New World. Every item you obtain will weigh a certain amount of units and take up space in your characters inventory or storage sheds found in each settlement. As you get further into New World, storage quickly becomes an issue that you'll need to solve.

Bags are one such way to deal with storage woes, increasing the encumbrance threshold for your character. These bags, just like other items, also come with perks that make them much more effective at storing goods. In this guide, we'll be looking at why you should consider making bags, how to craft them, where to find Runes of Holding, and some of the best perks you can find on bags.

We updated this guide on September 22, 2022, ahead of the upcoming Brimstone Sands expansion. This new update includes Legendary Bags, 600 Gear Score bags that come with a multitude of new perks, including Mote affiliation. More on that below. This guide is focused entirely on bags themselves, not on storing items. For a more in-depth look at storage, see our New World storage guide.

Legendary Bags - Brimstone Sands Expansion

Ahead of the upcoming Brimstone Sands expansion, which adds a new region, quests, items, and more, we are going to discuss the brand-new Legendary Bags that have been added to the PTR.

Here's a brief rundown of what these bags mean for you:

  • Legendary Bags are 600 GS items with five perks, this is increased from three perks on the current Rare bags we've all been using for a while now.
  • Perks are the same, but you can now roll with up to five perks. On ordinary bags, 400-500 GS, perks do not stack. This has changed. You can now roll a bag that has two perks from the same set choice of perks, so something like a bag that rolls Extra Pockets, Luck, and Weaver's and Tanner's Burden.
  • This is great news because it decreases the need to have as many sets of bags for different tasks, if you are a min-maxxing player with full kits.
  • There is also a new perk at 600 Gear Score that is guaranteed - Lasting Consumption. This makes potions, hones, etc last for 17% longer. Right now, these currently stack! That means running three legendary bags will really cut down on your consumable costs.

How To Craft Legendary Bags

Legendary Bags are expensive.

Storage
  • 360-380
Cost
  • x45 Runic Leather
  • x25 Phoenixweave
  • x10 Asmodeum
  • x1 Grand Rune Of Holding
Armoring Level
  • 200

As you can see, they require plenty of high-level materials, including Asmodeum. You will also need to start grinding those faction quests to get your hands on more Grand Runes of Holding - these will skyrocket in price when the expansion drops. If you're in the right place at the right time, you should be able to make a lot of money on crafting them. You should check out our Armoring Guide to see how to get your skill up to 200 asap.

Why Bags Are Important

Beyond leveling your Strength attribute, bags are the only way you can increase your character's carry weight in New World, so it is extremely important you equip the strongest bags possible. If you haven't gotten very far in New World, this game places major emphasis on gathering materials and crafting. It isn't uncommon to carry 100+ units worth of ore, wood, or other materials. The more high-quality bags you have, the better your leveling and crafting experiences will be.

You can equip up to three bags in New World. Each bag slot is unlocked at the following levels:

  • Bag Slot #1: 5
  • Bag Slot #2: 30
  • Bag Slot #3: 45

You'll get one bag for free during early-game questing. Excluding the Gator Bag, you'll need to either craft or purchase additional bags.

Bag Storage Capacity

Like everything else in New World, bags come in various tiers that determine how effective they are at storing gear. Higher-tier bags can carry far more storage but are tougher to craft. Gear Score affects your bag's storage capacity. For example, a T5 Infused Leather Adventurer's Satchel can carry 300 units of goods at Gear Score 500. If you get the same bag with a Gear Score of 600, it can carry 360 units instead. Bags can also come with perks that enhance their storage capabilities (explained later).

The Best Bag Perks

Just like your other items, bags can come with perks that enhance their capabilities in some way. Most bag-related perks will either reduce the weight of certain trade skill items or give a flat boost to your bag's storage capacity. By far the best bag perk is Extra Pockets. This perk grants a varying boost to your bag's storage capacity, the strength of which depends on your bag's Gear Score. Extra Pockets grants anywhere from +50-95 extra encumbrance.

Beyond that, keep an eye out for "Burden" perks. These perks reduce the weight of certain gathering profession materials by 5-10%. For example, a Lumberjack Burden perk reduces the weight of wood, timber, and logging axes by 5-10%. If you can get three bags with the same perk, this can reduce the weight of certain items by as much as 30%, synergizing well with Extra Pockets.

There's one more perk worth mentioning: Azoth Attuned. This perk increases how much Azoth you gain by 3-4.8%. Since Azoth is required to fast travel and craft perks in New World, it's not a bad idea to have one or two bags with this perk. Extra Pockets and Burden perks are more impactful for raw storing, but if you aren't hounding for storage space, Azoth Attuned is an excellent alternative.
