Halo Infinite has surprised millions of fans with its numerous addictive gameplay modes. New and old, fresh and timeless alike, 343 Industries has imbued its iconic franchise with a fresh lease on life. One of the best examples of this can be found in Total Control.

Total Control is similar to the conventional 'Domination' game mode seen across franchises like Call Of Duty or Destiny. However, Halo Infinite adds a twist: a team must control all capture points simultaneously in order to get a point. On paper, this sound simple. In practice, it can make a big difference in mode's moment-to-moment feel.

Updated on May 27 by Quinton O'Connor: With the launch of Season 2: Lone Wolves, Halo Infinite's multiplayer has seen a resurgence. Returning Total Control players will want to learn more about the new Breaker map, while players entirely fresh to the game will no doubt wish to find out what the mode even is. In either case, we've got you covered.

8/8 First and Foremost: Safeguard Your Points

Seeing a prime area ready to be taken over can feel immeasurably tempting, however, it is vital that you safeguard any areas your team has captured before you even think about taking the fight away. As Total Control spawns at least one capture point near your team, it is likely that each team will have one and fight for the third (usually in the middle).

The first order of business has to be ensuring the safety of the point your team has already captured. Whether this is by clearing out any enemies or setting up a defense if you lack one, the safety of this objective is usually the deciding factor for who gets the next point.

7/8 Save Explosive Weapons For Pushes

Halo Infinite brings back some fantastic weapons and introduces several brilliant new ones. When setting up your defense, if you happen to get a strong explosive weapon (like the Rocket Launcher or the Heatwave), do not waste the ammo going for a single kill; instead, conserve the ammunition for the enemies' next line of attack.

In Total Control, you can expect many ways that enemies will converge onto the point, whether it be the single Spartan charging head first, a group moving in a pack, or even several vehicles like Warthogs moving in unison. Withholding the Rocket Launcher for these occasions will not only give you a handful of medals but will also save the point for you and the team.

6/8 Provide Support From Both Above And Below

A key element in any team-based Halo mode is, in fact, teamwork. The direct support of your ally Spartans can be incredibly helpful, and with Halo Infinite's wide array of vehicles and weaponry, this can be achieved from both above and below.

With many vantage points on the maps having long-range weapons, like the Sniper Rifle, you can provide support for your allies from a distance on ground level. With amazing vehicles like the Banshee, you can provide direct air support for each point. Utilize the weapons that you have at your disposal, whether it be for wiping out a squad of Spartans forming an attack on your objective, or helping your frontline push to try and seize theirs.

5/8 Familiarize Yourself With The Map Pool

Halo Infinite not only brings in some fantastic equipment, weaponry, and vehicles but also introduces new maps that are sure to be favorites of the series. The game launched with a solid ten; as of Season 2: Lone Wolves, that number has been upped to a full dozen.

Many maps have unique weapon spawn points that can provide a benefit to the whole team, and others have some vital chokeholds that can decide a fight if successfully defended. Therefore, it is vital to try and take the time in each game and explore the map to the fullest extent. Those who explore will come across some brilliant weaponry and details, and they will be able to use this knowledge in their future games.

4/8 Breakthroughs On The Breaker Map

Breaker is the first non-launch Big Team Battle map. As such, it receives favoritism when Halo Infinite's playlists roll their invisible dice, so to speak, on which map will pop up next. If you're reading this, and we're a bit behind on updates, apologies! But as of this writing, at least, you're going to be seen a ton of Breaker.

Total Control's bloodiest spot in Breaker is surely the narrow tunnel that ties the two sides of the map together. Both open out onto the near edge of a team's default territory. There are ways to jump down into the tunnel via a teleporter as well, but the most devious technique — and the best for Total Control — is to leap down over at that massive gap Spartans cannot jump across (and even vehicles will not successfully trek without a good boost) and land upon the catwalk beneath. It's a bit scary at first, but not too bad once you're used to it. You can rush up to the control zone here from the side, often grabbing a powerful weapon spawn as you do so.

Other control points are not so viciously placed, but elevation is often crucial to pushing forward on Breaker. Always keep this in mind, as many places are only a few feet higher but perfect for foes to get in a quick and clean headshot.

3/8 Spartans Don't Have Traffic Laws

It would be insulting to believe that Master Chief would ever drive a Mongoose carefully, and it is vital that you follow his precedent. Sometimes a fight calls for a brave Spartan to charge in with a Ghost and try to splatter any enemies while sacrificing themselves. It may be a last-ditch effort, but it is most definitely effective.

The vehicle handling is incredibly smooth in Halo Infinite, so it's important that you are not scared to drive through areas you would never think of. In Total Control, having a strong Warthog location in an area that can catch enemies off-guard can give your team the definitive edge in a successful attack or defense of one of the capture points.

2/8 You Don't Have To Be Capturing To Be Captivating

It is definitely tempting to go into every Halo Infinite multiplayer match just trying to get the highest kill to death average, and this can be a great way for both new and old players to provide an advantage to their team. Although not everyone likes to play for the objective, you can come to a compromise and focus purely on killing while also helping your team in Total Control.

If defending is not your style, you can provide support for the attackers on your team by trying to take out every enemy in order to help out their push. Instead of joining the push, if you can effectively help them (whether it be taking out any Vehicles or sneaking behind and killing any Snipers), it will give the whole team the advantage, while you can still focus on racking up kills.

1/8 Get Behind Enemy Lines

In the ensuing battle for one of Halo Infinite's control points, the following events are inevitable: explosions, grenades, vehicles set aflame, and Spartans grappling in and promptly dying. In this chaos, paying attention to the details can be incredibly taxing. Unfortunately, this means that enemies can easily slip into your back lines and wreak havoc amongst your team without you having a clue what is going on.

Although you can remain far back and keep an eye out for any enemies trying this, the real fun is going in yourself. If you are lucky enough to get a strong AOE (area-of-effect) weapon, or a fantastic melee one, going behind enemy lines in the midst of an intense firefight can lead to some easy points. If you're lucky enough to get an Energy Sword, within seconds the whole line of attack can be broken by one lucky Spartan who managed to sneak behind.
