Azhdaha is a tanky boss that was introduced in Genshin Impact 1.5. He is a weekly boss that can be accessed after doing the second part of Zhongli's story. However, the Azhdaha you will fight with Zhongli is much less powerful than the weekly boss. This is because Azhdaha has the ability to switch elements, forcing players to quickly counter his new form.

This boss has a ton of health, and it will take quite some time to whittle him down, especially if you choose to fight him on one of the higher difficulties. Many players have even found Azhdaha to be much more difficult than the original Childe fight.

Updated February 13, 2022 by William Quick: Genshin Impact continues to bring in new players with continuing expansions and new events. To this day, one of the biggest and most difficult involves taking down the giant boss known as Azhdaha. He's a fearsome foe indeed, but he can be defeated.

Azhdaha Prep

Azhdaha isn't like the other bosses; he requires you to either be amazing at dodging or bringing a shield character. The safest route is to put one of the following characters in your party to protect you:

  • Zhongli
  • Noelle
  • Xinyan
  • Beidou
  • Diona

You will also want to do quite a bit of cooking before the battle, be sure to have plenty of healing items, and stock up on food that boosts your attack and defense. You will also want to have some revives with you. If you have Qiqi or Barbara, it's highly recommended that you add them to your party as well. Azhdaha deals major damage, and it's unlikely you won't find a character low on health during the battle.

Azhdaha can switch between Cryo, Hydro, Electro, and Pyro elements.

Since Azhdaha changes elements, it's a bit hard to choose a DPS. Your best bet is to go with your favorite and try to put a ranged character like Ganyu or Amber in your extra slot, as getting close to Azhdaha can be extremely dangerous.

Azhdaha's Phases And Attacks

This giant beast is physically bulky in addition to being capable of using a variety of elemental attacks. Watch Azdaha's movements to see what sort of attack he'll use which will change as he enters different phases.

At each new phase, Azhdaha will infuse himself with an element that will boost his resistance to it by 60%!

Phase 1

This is Azhdaha's starting phase. He has 70% Resistance to Geo, 40% to Physical, 10% to all other Elements, and uses the following attacks:

  • Skull Slam: Azhdaha lifts his head and slams his chin down in front of him.
  • Body Slam: Azhdaha tilts to one side standing on two legs for a moment before landing and thrusting his body in the opposite direction.
  • Seismic Stomp: Azhdaha will lift one of his front legs before slamming it down and shooting out projectiles.
  • Quake: Azhdaha jumps up in the air and slams down generating a huge shockwave.
  • Tail Slam: Used when you're behind Azhdaha, he'll raise his tail up and slam it down like a hammer.
  • Tail Sweep: Used when you're behind Azhdaha, he'll raise and tilt his tail away from you before sweeping it down towards you while turning around.
  • Tusk Charge: Used from a distance, Azhdaha takes a few steps back before charging towards you with his horns down.
  • Back Spikes: A ranged attack, Azhdaha takes a step back and slightly wiggles his body before thrusting upwards and launching projectiles from his back.
  • Burrow: An attack exclusive to the Geo element, Azhdaha burrows into the ground and will pursue you while bursting through the ground.

Phase 2

Azhdaha will enter this phase at around two-thirds health and will infuse himself with either Hydro or Pyro. He can use all his previous attacks as well as two new ones:

  • Big Quake: Azhdaha alternates lifting his front legs which each slam generating a shockwave. He finishes the sequence with a large two-legged slam.
  • Roar: Azhdaha raises his head up and bellows summoning projectiles around the arena.

Phase 3

This is Azhdaha's last phase which he'll enter at one-third health. He'll infuse himself with either Electro or Cryo and gain some new attacks:

  • Tail Tree: Azhdaha burrows into the ground leaving only his tail exposed which generates a powerful AoE attack around it.
  • Tail Storm: Azhdaha takes a stance and raises his tail into the air which generates multiple projectiles that he will fire at you.

No matter what element Azhdaha is infused with, he will always use the same movements to make attacks.

Azhdaha Strategy

Azhdaha hits hard and is especially dangerous up close. He can attack with his head, feet, body, and tail so don't let him catch you off guard. However, remember that he also has tactics for closing the distance if you get too far like charging and burrowing. These are easy to dodge; just make sure you keep moving.

When Azhdaha launches projectile spikes, just be sure to run away from them as they explode. If you see a circle on the ground, then quickly run out of it before you're hit with an attack. The real danger will begin when he switches to another element. From there on out, you should work to shield yourself; if Azhdaha hits you with an elemental attack, you will be marked. Being marked makes your character constantly take large chunks of damage.

During his elemental form, Azhdaha also becomes more aggressive and will release floating orbs, homing circles, and deal elemental damage when he causes shockwaves. A shield will keep you from being marked, but you should still dodge as many attacks as you can.

  • One of the best ways to damage Azhdaha is by using a bow user or a catalyst to keep a safe distance.
  • Remember to cause as many reactions as possible to help whittle down Azhdaha's large health bar faster.
  • If you do use a close-range attack style, be sure to have healing ready and a shield equipped.

This domain can be entered in co-op. Teaming up with other players can make taking down Azhdaha much easier.

Keep an eye on your food buffs while fighting. Having a defense and attack buff can make all the difference during difficult fights.
