Kaeya is a four-star Cryo character in Genshin Impact, and is notably one of the few characters you'll recruit for free as part of the main story. While being a free gift makes Kaeya seem like he'll lag behind other characters, he can actually be pretty great in battle when used right.

If you're one of the many people building a team that includes Kaeya, you'll probably want to max out his level. To do so, you'll need to ascend him at levels 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80. Additionally, he has three upgradeable talents that you can level up with the help of the right items (and some Mora!). Here's everything you'll need.

Leveling Materials

The total number of EXP every Genshin character needs to reach level 90 is 8,362,650, and Kaeya is no exception. You can earn EXP in various ways, but the main method is through experience scrolls. Here's one combination that'll get you to level 90:

Kaeya's Ascension Cost and Item Locations

To ascend characters, you need a combination of boss drops, enemy drops, Mora, gemstones, and a local specialty item. For Cryo characters, the gemstone you need is Shivada Jade.

As for a boss drop, Kaeya's comes from defeating the Cryo Regisvine in Mondstadt. The item in question is Hoarfrost Core, which you'll need quite a few of. If you need help defeating this boss, check out our guide.

For common enemy drops, you'll need the various levels of insignias dropped by treasure hoarders. This band of bandits can be found basically anywhere, though they do appear pretty significantly around Liyue.

Kaeya will also need Calla Lilies to ascend completely. These flowers are found in Mondstadt, particularly frequently near bodies of water. Springvale, the small village near the city, is a great spot to hunt for Calla Lilies. If you need, you can also purchase five of them every three days from Flora, the flower vendor in Mondstadt, or grow them in your Serenitea Pot.

Kaeya's Talent Materials

The special talent books that Kaeya needs for his talents are the Ballad books. His upgradeable talents also require some more treasure hoarder insignias, as well as one of the special drops from the weekly battle against Andrius, the Wolf of the North. This is the Spirit Locket of Boreas, and it can drop when you defeat Andrius on level 70 or higher.

The Ballad books can mainly be obtained on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from the Forsaken Rift domain.

As for the Crowns of Insight, you'll need to keep an eye out for special events, for the most part. These items are often rewards during limited-time events. However, you can also earn a few as rewards for making offerings to the Sacred Sakura in Inazuma or Frostbearing Tree of Dragonspine.
